When you get those pent-up emotions out, it's easier to move on to more positive feelings. While it may seem counterintuitive to intentionally seek out the saddest movies of all time, a good cry can be extremely cleansing and freeing. Turn on the right heart-wrenching tale about a teen with cancer falling in love with her bad-boy classmate-you know the one-and you'll become a weepy mess who's barely able to function. A trailer describes one of the “trademarks” of an Indian wedding as being really “personal,” with each one having “a personality of its own” - so, naturally, I’m looking forward to the episode that spotlights the gay couple, which will hopefully live up to the colorful glimpses I got of it in the show’s preview. The best sad romantic movies can make you feel alive. Taking an inside peek into India’s incredibly profitable wedding industry, this new docuseries follows the extravagant weddings of six different couples, all of whom want their special day to be really, well, special. The Big Day, Collection 1 : February 14 on NetflixĪrriving on Valentine’s Day, The Big Day is already poised to be the unofficial sequel of last year’s wildly popular Indian Matchmaking. Luckily, he very quickly meets Lewis, an expat who has also been forced to find his way in a city that feels foreign to him - not many Black people in Vietnam, wouldn’t you know - and the pair form a romantic bond that’s mutually beneficial for their inner trauma. Arriving 30 years later, Kit immediately finds himself feeling like a tourist, especially as he's ostracized from the estranged, extended family that didn’t get to evacuate. Starring the easy-on-the-eyes Henry Golding in a completely opposite role to the one that made him famous in Crazy Rich Asians, Monsoon tells the moving story of Kit, who returns to Vietnam for the first time since escaping Saigon during the Vietnam War.

It’s weird to describe a movie as “quiet,” but in the case of Hong Khaou’s beautifully intimate Monsoon, that's only meant as a compliment. This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from. I mean, where else can I go to hear Cate Blanchett scream, “Do you wanna fuck me, Barbara?!” Though the film has certainly received its fair share of criticism for its twisted depiction of lesbians as stalker-prone psychopaths, for me, Notes On a Scandal is still a beloved queer camp classic. It’s the de facto high point of this pulpy, over-the-top tale of lust, obsession, and age-inappropriate sexual relationships, when Blanchett’s Sheba finally confronts Dench’s Barbara about the clear unrequited crush the latter harbors for her.

“You think this is a love affair? A relationship,” Blanchett inquires with all the bitter contempt in the world, before pushing Dench into a wooden display case behind her. When it comes to scenes that are permanently etched into my memory, this one from Notes on a Scandal, between Cate Blanchett and Dame Judi Dench (both Oscar winners who were also nominated for their roles here) immediately stands out.

While most narratives about this period rely on melodrama, the latest project from reliable TV genius Russell T Davies goes where no story about this harrowing era has ever dared go before - and it’s all the better for it.

By focusing on a group of young folks at a time when the “AIDS crisis” had yet to be widely accepted as a crisis at all, It’s a Sin is in an incredibly unique position to explore what it meant to live unapologetically during a time when the (queer) world was slowly descending into turmoil. Starring Years & Years’ Olly Alexander as Ritchie, who moves from the countryside to the busy streets of London and immediately falls in with the city’s bustling queer nightlife, this five-episode miniseries centers on him and his extended group of friends as they party, work, have sex, pursue their dreams, and decide how best to respond to the idea that there's a new epidemic that's killing gay men.

I’ve never seen a show like It’s a Sin, and that’s one of the highest forms of praise I can bestow upon a series about the well-documented AIDS crisis.
